The Democratic Republic of Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa bordered by Kenya, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Uganda lies in the Great Lakes Region of Africa and the coffee from this area compares favourably with other East African high grown coffees. Coffee is generally grown on the slopes of the Elgon mountain range in three distinct areas, namely the Mbale, Sironko, and Kapchorwa Districts; thus it is found at varying altitudes ranging from 1300 metres in the South, climbing up to 1900 metres in the Central and
Northern Districts.
The Bugisu crop is inter-cropped alongside other crops on the ‘kabanjja’. The area of the kabanjja under cultivation for Arabica coffee averages 0.36 hectares, with an average yield of approximately 600kgs per hectare. The harvest season starts in September, completing around February each year. The population of the Mbale district is over 90% rural, with the community primarily supported by agriculture. Apart from coffee the region is also known for maize and vegetables.
We have had a version of this coffee before in our Happy Daze Blend, but this version is on another level! Crazy big candy-like notes coming through, combined with a solid backbone of chocolate and caramel. Absolutely delicious, no matter which way you choose to drink it.
